Hamburg approves STS bunkering of methanol and LNG

As of 28 August, the Waltershof Port in Hamburg is officially approved for the ship-to-ship bunkering of methanol and liquefied natural gas (LNG), allowing direct fuel transfer between ships at sea.

Bunkering can take place at the central container terminals Burchardkai and Predöhlkai. This step supports the Hamburg Port Authority’s (HPA) broader goals of promoting climate-friendly shipping and advancing energy and climate initiatives in the port. To accommodate these vessels, Hamburg has developed the necessary “bunker-ready” infrastructure, ensuring the availability of alternative fuels and enhancing the port’s future-readiness.
